GPS Navigation for Land, Sea and in the Air

By Dave Nettles

Us guys do not like to admit it but to be honest we do sometimes get lost. Maybe not around town but sometimes when we are in another state, camping in the mountains or off shore in the deep blue sea.

Let’s face it getting lost is just something that happens to the best of us for one reason or another from time to time. There are special cases where some get lost when they pull out of their driveway and this article is for you as well.

It does not matter who we are because we all can use a little help in this area. Stopping for directions is just not a process that works on the sea, in the air or back in the woods. An especially in town if you are a man you know many are put off when asked directions. This leads to driving around aimlessly acting like we know where we are going.

Look the navigation systems with the technology available today will make everyone look smart. Even for the person that gets lost when they back out of the driveway. The navigation systems can get you where you want to go and get you back home with ease. In the air, on the sea or back in the woods your route will be guided even if you get off course they recalculate the route to get you back on course. This works on the roads also, make a wrong turn and a GPS will recalculate your route and guide you back on course with ease.

Today cars, boats, motorcycles and airplanes come with navigation systems built-in so about all a person must do is turn it on and the response from the unit is (Where To) and you can enter a destination by hand and with some systems all you need to do is tell it where you want to go.

Today even if you don't have a vehicle that has a GPS system already installed there is still many solutions for you. There are so many different types of navigation systems on the market to address your situation and they are very cost effective. One of the better GPS makers if Garmin and they have the long term experience building navigation systems since the military allowed access to the satellites by the public for navigation.

The interface for the average person or the technically challenged is addressed in all the Garmin products. They are so easy to operate anyone with no experience can get directions to and from where they want to go with no problems.

Do not be afraid to buy one of the very low cost Garmin’s because they are packed with easy to use features to get you there and back without a problem. As the price goes up more features are added like voice response and Bluetooth detailed maps and waypoints of interest. Features increase the cost but the feature you want is available for you special requirement on land, sea and in the air.

My requirements for GPS navigation began deep sea fishing making 25 to 40 nautical miles out to sea. With the steady currant of the gulfstream to the north adjusting the route with no waypoints but the sky and the sea takes a lot of experience. When coming back to shore you could end up miles to the north or the south. So a navigation system was needed to track your way back accurately. Garmin provided the best solutions for navigating on the sea for very reasonable prices.

The next requirement was making appointment at people’s homes in south Florida in three different large areas. There were the gated communities and neighborhoods in places I had never been before. Also I had the need to be on the phone all the time while driving. The answer was provided by Garmin in a car navigation system with Bluetooth for hands free phone operation. It would get me to my appointments on time day after day and never missed a beat.

Perfect for traveling to new places and the wife decides she wants a smoothie in a new town we have never been in. With a quick look up in the automotive navigation GPS for smoothie shops we are guided to one of our favorite stops with no searching or lost time. When out on the interstate and you need a place to eat of a drugstore or whatever a quick look up in the GPS provides the destination you are searching for every time.

I hear that there are all sorts of celebrity voices for certain GPS brands. I believe that a Star Wars selection is presently available with Darth Vader & Yoda and Han solo to follow.

Thanks for sharing, Dave.
We have a GPS and last year we traveled to Canada. When we crossed the line into Canada, our GPS quit working. We didn't know that you needed to purchase additional coverage.
Best wishes.

I love my GPS, especially the sound of the programmed voice. I call her "Gabby". I've heard of others calling her"Gypsy".
